Bio

Madhukar Trivedi, M.D., is Professor of Psychiatry, Founding Director of the Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care, Betty Jo Hay Distinguished Chair in Mental Health, and Julie K. Hersh Chair for Depression Research and Clinical Care at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He earned his MD in Baroda, India, completing residencies in Psychiatry at University General Hospital, Baroda, India and Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan. Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Trivedi is an established clinical and translational researcher with extensive experience serving as Principal Investigator on numerous single and multi-site clinical trials funded by the National Institutes of Health, foundations, and industry sponsors.

Dr. Trivedi’s research has focused on understanding the neurobiology and psychology of mood disorders and improving treatment of depression. He has spearheaded studies investigating the longitudinal course of depression, efficacy of antidepressant treatments, developing guidelines to manage treatment resistant depression and focusing on biomarker discovery. He led the Establishing Moderators and Biosignatures of Antidepressant Response for Clinical Care trial, Combining Medications to Enhance Depression Outcomes trial, and the Sequenced Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression study. He leads the Texas Resilience Against Depression study, a longitudinal study of mood disorders. He leads the Youth Aware of Mental Health program in Texas and is the scientific director of the Texas Youth Depression and Suicide Research Network. He also leads research on stimulant use disorders and is the lead PI of the Big South/West Node of the NIDA Clinical Trials Network.

Dr. Trivedi has published over 750 peer reviewed manuscripts and has been recognized as one of the nation’s most highly cited researchers in psychiatry since 2014 by Thomson Reuters and Clarivate Analytics. He has received numerous awards, including the Gerald L. Klerman Award from the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association Scientific Advisory Board, and the Psychiatric Excellence Award from the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians. He is a member of professional organizations, including the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, the American College of Psychiatrists, and the American Psychiatric Association.
